I would like to inform the church, parents, teachers and the society at large why high school girls are getting pregnant. It is because they are having unprotected sex.

That is the only way to get pregnant. Watching porn will not make you pregnant. Watching condom commercials will not make you pregnant. And wearing short skirts will not make you pregnant.

Certainly,  some of the issues have a correlation but I know no one has done any research on the connection between watching porn and pregnancy for a fact. However, CS Mucheru will not let common sense get in the way of his decision making. He has decided on the strength of his gut to turn a knee-jerk reaction into possible policy. Banning pornography to stop school girls from getting pregnant is like banning wine glasses to reduce alcoholism.

Teenagers in rural areas tend to get pregnant more often. Poor schools are usually where we find cases of girls doing their KCPE from a delivery bed. Is there a correlation between poverty and early pregnancy? Well, a lot of statistics support this fact. Also, in urban areas, kids tend to have more access to technology, information, role models and Marie Stope clinics who are now banned from operating in the country and running commercials. There is a reason the age we live in called the information age. Without information, you will be hamstrung and always fall behind. This is true for teenage girls and also for the likes of Ezekiel Mutua, the clergy and the CS for information (Ironic of the last one).

Our children know about alcohol and watch us drink it. Or our uncles or on TV and we tell them they cannot have alcohol until they are older. Sex is no different. Teach kids about safe sex early. It will not make them want to do it but if you still believe that, the start even earlier.

The ABC model of sexual health education in schools is redundant and is positioned ass side up.

Abstinence is important but should not be the main agenda in sex education. Teenagers want to have sex and they will have sex. A lot. Parents are terrified of talking to their children about it and leave it to teachers. Teachers also have their own children at home who they are struggling to teach about sex and they only do the bare minimum on the same at school. As a result, most teens learn about sex from porn movies and insinuation from PG 13 Mexican soaps.

Since I know none of you my dear readers have ever deigned to pollute yourselves by watching porn, I should tell you the sex in porn movies rarely involves condoms. It objectifies women and often black men and sets unrealistic expectations. It might teach kids how to have sex but not how to do it safely. That is the work of parents. A 13-year-old has access to porn but does not know how to put on a condom. A 12-year-old girl is sneaking around with the boy and would not know to ask for a condom either.  However, banning porn will not change the problem. Let us stop acting like teenage pregnancies started when free porn became available on the internet in the early 2000s.

Children need to be taught about safe sex as soon as they are mature enough to know what sex is. When you introduce reproductive health in class 4 or 5. Go all the way and tell them about sex. Contrary to what you will hear. Telling children about sex will not make them want to do it. However, if they discover through playing with each other. Well, they are halfway there. In any case, a 6-year-old has a very little drive at a physical or psychological level to have sex. However, they have the mental sophistication to understand that the white prince and princess on TV have sex to get little babies. And that sex is something grownups do and unless they want to catch an STD or get a baby, they use condoms.

I know it is hard for you to think in these terms but you must try because it is the reality. Armed with this knowledge, when their hormones tell them to start having sex with anything that has a pulse, you can tell them to abstain knowing that if they are abstaining, they are abstaining from safe sex.

Our children know about alcohol and watch us drink it. Or our uncles or on TV and we tell them they cannot have alcohol until they are older. Sex is no different. Teach kids about safe sex early. It will not make them want to do it but if you still believe that, the start even earlier.

A for the banning of pornography. Let’s just say it will be a waste of time and probably create a huge industry of illegal porn -hey it might even create jobs! -  Clearly, the CS has never heard of VPNs or the Tor Browser. Plus, if the government cannot stop its own websites from being hacked, I highly doubt they can monitor the porn industry which is bigger than Hollywood. My advice, ignore ignorance.
